What is commonly called “low season” in Cancun brings high times for those in the know, as August is one of the more active months for community events with a focus on locals. This month brings on a full schedule of festivals, cultural presentations, and other special presentations that ensure anyone who finds themselves in the city during these weeks will return to their routines with a newfound appreciation for this destination.
From August 11th through the 13th, the natural splendor of Cancun and its beaches are celebrated with the Fiesta de la Playa en Cancun. This citywide beach party spans over 12 kilometers of shoreline between Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc, making it one of the most massive and activity-dense seaside events in the world.
The Fiesta de la Playa in Cancun incorporates options for the entire family from street food installations and live outdoor concerts to themed parties and parades. There will also be competitions including windsurfing and jet ski races as well as an extensive fireworks display after nightfall. In fact, the festival is planned for submission to the Guinness Book of World Records as “The World’s Largest Beach Party,” making it a can’t miss event.
The following weekend, on Saturday the 17th, the anniversary of Isla Mujeres’ founding will be observed in the city. This popular point of interest just off the coast will come alive in celebration on this occasion, bringing music and dance together with processions and general revelry to create a memorable time in one of Cancun’s most memorable locations.
The month’s activities wrap up in festive fashion with the Cancun Salsa Bachata Festival on August 31. As part of this hotly anticipated Labor Day weekend event, world renowned salsa dancers such as Terry Salsalianza and Johnny Vazquez will showcase their skills in dazzling performances. Lovers of dance can also participate in classes, workshops, and social dancing events that combine the passion of the pursuit with one of the world’s most beautiful backdrops.
Although there may not be quite as many visitors in town when compared to other times of year, the activity calendar in Cancun rolls on with some of the most exciting events of the year. Visitors who choose August for their visit to the city will discover that not only does this seaside setting offer no end of interest for savvy travelers, but that some of their new favorite bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues may be much less crowded as well!
