Day Trip to Playa Del Carmen

Making a day trip to visit Playa del Carmen while on vacation in Cancun is certainly worth your while and very simple to organize. This beautiful beachfront destination is smaller than Cancun, and has a more bohemian vibe, boasting the same stunning turquoise waters and white sands that characterize the Yucatan coastline.

The convenience of Playa del Carmen is that it is so close and easy to get to that you can make a pleasant day trip or half day trip from Cancun with very little stress involved. For example, you could leave early in the morning and return late at night, spending the whole day there on the beach, shopping or enjoying tours like swimming with dolphins or water sports; arrive for lunch and some shopping, returning in time to have dinner at the resort; or arrive for dinner and the pumping nightlife that emerges after dark getting a taxi home in the early hours of the morning. The choice is yours.

How to get there

Less than an hour’s drive from Villa del Palmar Cancun, you have many options for getting to and from Playa del Carmen: renting a car is easy and the route is almost foolproof, while public transport is regular and hiring a taxi to be your chauffeur for the day is also a reasonably priced option. Likewise, those who love the ease and reliability of an organized tour will find great options at the on-site tour agency.

What to see and do?

One of the reasons that Playa del Carmen makes a great day trip from Cancun is its 5th Avenue. When you arrive, the first thing you will want to do is get your bearings (which is so easy) walking down the colorful 5th Avenue with its brightly painted restaurants, stores, artisan stalls, galleries and bars. The pedestrian area is great for strolling and people watching, and is fun and safe anytime of the day or night. During the day you will join a melange of families and couples, while in the evening the strip comes alive with diners looking for great gourmet options and traditional eateries, followed by young fun-seekers and the young-at-heart of all ages hitting the strip to enjoy the lively nightlife.

The beach at Playa del Carmen also deserves a mention. Here you can enjoy a number of fun water-sport activities as well as find great spots for bathing and relaxing. You will also find plenty of opportunities to purchase jewellery, dresses, sun hats and all kinds of wares on offer from beach vendors, and may even return to Cancun with your hair braided or a henna tattoo!

Playa del Carmen is where you get the ferry to reach the island of Cozumel. If you are short of time and want to kill two birds with one stone, you could combine the two destinations in one day if you arrive early enough. The ferry leaves from the heart of the town at the beginning of 5th Avenue.
