Portada-Puerto-Vallarta

May and June are among the most pleasantly sunny months on the Pacific Coast calendar, and Puerto Vallarta takes full advantage of the weather with a packed schedule of events and special attractions. From yearly local street festivals to major international exhibitions that draw in spectators from around the world, the region holds ample appeal during this stellar season, making it the right place at the right time for practically any visitor.

A Magnificent May

May is ripe with opportunities to enjoy a memorable experience in Mexico…indeed, the month itself is a celebration in Puerto Vallarta. The Festival Cultural de Mayo emcompasses weeks of events and activities that spotlight the area’s vibrant creative community.

Admirers of Mexican culture will get a real treat with a May visit, from art fairs and free outdoor concerts in the heart of the city to food festivals and traditional live entertainment in the charming residential subdivision of Pitillal.

The merry month of May also brings Cinco de Mayo celebrations to town. The national holiday commemorates the Battle of Puebla during the Mexican Revolution, and while it is not as widely celebrated as it is outside the country, bars and restaurants commonly hold special events for visitors that can make for an enjoyable evening in town.

The first weeks of May are an exciting time for visiting sports fans as well. The Puerto Vallarta Open goes through May 5 after qualifiers in the final days of April, and this world-class tennis tournament will be contested by some of the top players on the planet, with many participants ranked #500 or above in global standings.

The second weekend of May brings the 3rd thrilling edition of Down Puerto Vallarta to the city. This extreme exhibition challenges professional downhill bikers to take on the hilly terrain at the foot of the Sierra Madre mountain range as they compete for top times and style points in an adrenaline-pumping display.

Mothers are especially exalted in Mexican culture, and this appreciation for motherhood is reflected by May 10th’s Dia de la Madre celebration. Observations of the holiday are held throughout town, and although restaurant reservations may be trickier to get, the atmosphere makes it well worth planning a special afternoon for Mom.

May 31st marks Anniversary Day in Puerto Vallarta, and the municipality’s 101st year celebration is sure to be a memorable event. Among an array of fairs and family activities, a live performance will be held at the Los Arcos Amphitheater in the city’s Centro district.

A Jubilant June

June is another eventful month in Puerto Vallarta. The first of the month is Dia de la Marina in Mexico, an occasion observing the rich seafaring legacy of the nation. This celebration honors the memory of the men who set out to sea on the “Tabasco,” the country’s first merchant ship, as well as all the mariners of Mexico who lost their lives at sea.

Dia de la Marina typically sees boat and ship captains from the area lay wreaths of flowers in the waters off the coast as well as sailing competitions in the memory of lost sailors and lively parties at night complete with fireworks displays. The first of June is also a great time to visit the city’s Naval Museum and gain a greater appreciation of Mexico’s history at sea.

After spanning the last two weeks of May, the yearly dining spectacular known as Restaurant week takes over Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit through June 10th. 2019’s Restaurant Week is expected to be bigger and better than ever before, incorporating dozens of restaurants throughout the Banderas Bay area.

This culinary celebration offers eating enthusiasts the chance to sample the signature dishes of area restaurants from the understated to the upscale with approachable prix-fixe menus. These three course menu options have been created to indulge the most discerning palates, delighting diners with a selection of cuisines from around the world as well as inspired takes on characteristic Mexican fare.
