Activities for Families

Our Activities Manager for Villa del Palmar Cancun, Nestor Fernández, shared with us some recipes and craft ideas, which are relatively easy to make with materials you most likely already have at home. We hope that you have fun making these at home with your kids!

1. Rock Painting

Rock painting is a fantastic recreational activity that allows for creativity and imagination! There are a few tricks to making decorative rocks, but if you follow our instructions, you will have success. You can paint them with pretty colors and even write an inspirational message when we are all looking for a little something to brighten our days. The messages can be, “Be Fearless”, “Have Faith”, “Stay Strong” or “Smile Often”. Display them on shelves, or in your garden, use smaller ones to fill a vase.

You will need

  • Flat rocks
  • Paintbrushes
  • Non-toxic, child-friendly paint
  • Paint sealer
  • A small tub for water to clean the brushes
  • Plastic or an old sheet to cover the surface

Instructions:

  • Pick smooth, flat rocks that don’t have ridges.
  • Wash the rocks with dish soap before decorating them and leave to dry
  • Cover work area with plastic or a sheet that will no longer be used
  • Place plastic jars with non-toxic paint of different colors, brushes of different sizes and containers with clean water (to wash the brush when changing color) in the work area
  • Prime the rocks with white paint so the colors you paint on top appear more vibrant.
  • Choose your design.
  • Paint your base. You can make layers with many colors. Use several coats of paint and let dry between layers.
  • Decorate your rock. You can use stencils or use a toothpick to make dots. To write on your rocks, use oil-based paint pens and Sharpies. Just make sure to let the base paint dry fully dry before attempting to write anything. To paint your letters, write your quote with a white gel pen, and use a liner brush to go over the top of each letter.
  • Cover with paint sealer

2. Mask Making

Masks are fun to make at any time of the year! It’s no secret that kids love playing make believe, so challenge them to create their own mask and they can be any character they want. We have listed some ideas below to help you and your family get started.

You will need

  • Soft craft foam, sturdy paper or felt

  • Sharpies or markers

  • Construction paper (if desired to cut out shapes to put on the masks)

  • Glue

  • Scissors

  • Pencils

  • Elastic string

Instructions:

  • With a pencil draw the figure of the desired mask on the felt or soft foam. For some ideas, you can draw shapes of animal heads, lions and bears, then allow the kids to decorate with stripes, spots or feathers.  Or they can create their own emoji mask. Use a big mixing bowl as a template to cut circles from craft foam or sturdy paper, then have kids draw or cut out their desired emoji face. They can make heart eyes, smiley faces and even stick out their tongue.

  • Use the scissors cut the shape of the mask along the edges after it is drawn

  • Decorate mask as you wish

  • Make a small hole on both sides of the mask

  • Cut a piece of elastic string to fit the mask to your child’s head

  • Place the elastic piece on both edges making a double knot

DIY Spa

During these stressful times, Giselle Sedinger Lopez, the talented Spa Manager at Villa del Palmar Cancun, shared a couple of suggestions to improve your health and well-being at home.

(1) Exfoliate your body with natural ingredients such as brown sugar and honey, which will keep your skin radiant.

(2) Meditate! Calm your mind, release tension and slow your thought process down. You can find numerous meditation podcasts and guided meditations online that will help you relax, breathe and de-stress.

(3) Declutter your house! Discard items that you no longer need and clothes that you no longer wear. An organized house helps to keep an organized mind.

(4) Make reading positive books or materials a daily habit. Reading decreases levels of stress and provides mental stimulation.

Make your own cocktails!

And lastly, we cannot leave out cocktails! After you have finished with your crafts, pizzas and meditation, you can re-create the vacation atmosphere with a fabulous cocktail.
