Inspiration for what to do in Quarantine

While the world continues to stay at home and practice social distancing, our staff from Villa del Palmar Cancun has been busy working on more suggestions for fun things you can do at home with your family to spend valuable time together make the best of the situation. We have included some more activities to do with the kids, some tips from the spa and more recipe ideas from our in-house chefs. We hope you enjoy them!

Activities with the kids

Our Activities Manager from Villa del Palmar Cancun, Nestor Fernández, shared with us some cool ideas for activities to do at home with the kids, that are relatively easy to do with materials you probably already have at home. We hope that you have fun trying them!

1. Chalk hair dye

Children love dressing up and changing their appearance. An easy way for you to change your child’s appearance is to dye their hair a different color. While regular dyes can be permanent and cause damage to their hair, hair coloring with chalk is easy to do, it isn’t permanent and you can easily wash it off with some water and shampoo.

You will need:

  • Pastel chalks (not oil chalks, they will stain their hair)
  • Gloves

  1. To start you will have to choose the colors well, since depending on the tone of your child’s hair there will be colors that adapt better. For example, if your child has light or blonde hair, the colors that will suit them best will be blues, violets and pinks. If they have brown or darker hair, the color that will best suit them will be vibrant blues, pinks, reds and greens.
  2. To start coloring your child’s hair with chalk, first put a towel around their shoulders to protect their clothes.
  3. Next take a small section of their hair (the width of a pencil) and twist it. Mist the section with a water bottle.
  4. Then take the chalk and rub the section just as if you were coloring on paper.
  5. Repeat this until all the hair is colored.
  6. Fix with a little hairspray.
  7. To remove the color, comb out the hair and then wash with shampoo and water.

2. Kinetic Sand

If you are wondering what kinetic sand is, it is sand that has other ingredients added to it to make it hold its shape when formed into a mold. It requires only five ingredients to make and kids can enjoy hours of play time pressing it in their hands and creating new shapes. Playing with kinetic sand allows kids to explore new textures and encourages sensory play.

You will need

  • 1 cup of play sand
  • A few drops of food coloring
  • 1/2 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup of water (add as needed)
  • 1 teaspoon of dish soap
  • 1 small bowl

  1. Add the sand to the bowl and add a few drops of food coloring.
  2. Mix until the color is uniform.
  3. Add the cornstarch and mix together really well.
  4. In another container, add the water and a few drops of dish soap and mix until bubbly.
  5. Next, slowly add the soapy water to the colored sand and mix until you have a consistency like modeling clay.
  6. Repeat this step as often as you wish to create different colors.
  7. Allow the kids to play with the sand and create shapes with their hands. They can also use cookie cutters, cups, spoons or other tools to make shapes.
  8. Because the kinetic sand is moist, it’s likely that the food coloring will stain their hands. To get the stain off, soak a wash cloth with vinegar and rub over the stained areas. Or alternatively, follow the same steps and leave the food coloring out.

During stressful times, taking care of yourself and your skin is important for your sense of well-being. Giselle Sedinger Lopez, the talented Spa Manager at Villa del Palmar Cancun, shared a couple of her recipes for a DIY face mask and body scrub so you can take care of your skin and create a spa day at home!

She said, “Facials are a really important part of the spa experience and one of my favorites things to do during the quarantine is the DIY face mask!”

1. Matcha-cha Face Mask

  You will need:

  • 1 Tablespoon of Matcha Powder (an extremely potent green tea)
  • 1 Teaspoon of raw honey
  • 2 Teaspoons of Aloe Vera gel

  1. Stir all of the ingredients together and apply to a clean, dry face.
  2. Let it dry and leave it on 20-40 minutes or a whole hour if you want!
  3. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry.

This facemask works great because Matcha is full of antioxidants that help to rejuvenate and tighten skin. Matcha fights free radicals that can damage skin cells. On top of that, it contains a lot of natural caffeine that helps stimulate your skin with new healthy growth leaving you revitalized. Raw honey is also full of antioxidants; it will help slow down aging. Honey is also incredibly moisturizing and smoothing.  Aloe fights acne, is anti-aging, and a super moisturizer. After this facemask, your skin will be glowing and noticeably smoother. Try and do a face mask once a week.

2. Margarita body Scrub

You will need:

  • 1 Cup Himalayan Salt.
  • 4 Tablespoons coconut oil
  • Juice from 2 Limes
  • 2-3 drops lime essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon lime zest
  • 1 tablespoon tequila (optional – add extra lime juice if omitted)
  • Add some color with Matcha powder

  1. In a small mixing bowl, add all of the ingredients and mix until well incorporated.  If you decide to not use the Matcha, it will be a white scrub with green specs from the lime zest.
  2. Wet skin and apply scrub generously. Rub in a circular motion to exfoliate. Enjoy the aroma of a margarita with tequila and you will feel as if you were under the shade of a palm tree at Villa Del palmar Cancún!
