Beaches Without Sargassum

Beaches Without Sargassum

Sargassum has been present on the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean in larger than normal quantities since the summer of 2013. Climate change and other environmental factors have caused ocean conditions to change, making the Caribbean Sea ripe for the bloom of this seaweed. Fish, turtles, and other marine life love the sargassum, but maybe you would prefer to have a clear beach for your vacation!

Villa del Palmar

Villa del Palmar Cancun is located in Playa Mujeres, which has fortunately been spared from much of the influx of sargassum that Cancun’s hotel zone, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Puerto Morelos are seeing.

The beach at Villa del Palmar still has crystal clear water, suitable for swimming and snorkeling, and a clean beach with sand free of seaweed. Our crews perform daily beach cleanings, so our guests can enjoy the beautiful white sands that Cancun is known for.

Isla Mujeres

The island of Isla Mujeres, just across the water from Villa del Palmar Cancun, also has not been hit so hard by the sargassum algae.

The island is an easy day trip from Cancun, and we recommend going to Playa Norte on the north end of the island. This is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. The ocean off the coast of this beach is so calm, it’s more like a very large swimming pool, because there are almost no ocean waves. This is a great place to swim with young children or less-experienced swimmers.

In addition to having clean beaches without sargassum, Isla Mujeres is also one of the most world renowned sites for snorkeling, scuba diving, and other outdoor adventure activities. There is a natural reef park at the south end of the island called “Garrafón” that has zip lines over the ocean, kayaks, panoramic pools, island excursions, hammocks, and even a temazcal in case you would like to try a traditional indigenous steam bath.

Getting There

To get to Isla Mujeres, take the Ultramar Ferry from the Puerto Juárez dock that is located just 5 minutes from Villa del Palmar Cancún. Ferries depart for Isla Mujeres every 30 minutes.
