Sargassum: A Natural Resource

Sargassum: A Natural Resource

Although the sargassum has made some of the beaches and waters along the Caribbean coast of Mexico a bit unpleasant for some travelers, enterprising entrepreneurs are turning the tide by repurposing this natural resource in new and innovative ways, making and distributing new products throughout Mexico and worldwide.

Food industry products

Sargassum is a type of seaweed which has many useful natural properties, one of which is alginic acid, a natural thickener and emulsifier that can be used in the food industry.

Bio-fuels

Sargassum can be used to make ethanol for biofuel, and as a fertilizer, as well as many other eco-friendly products.

Paper products

Sargassum is a great product for producing paper goods without cutting down trees! It contains cellulose and hemi-cellulose, which are natural raw materials used to make paper. Notebooks, craft paper, paper cups, and restaurant menu holders are being made from sargassum in Mexico.

Skin care, hair care and makeup

Sargassum is being used to make moisturizers, sunscreen, hair strengthening treatments, and cosmetics in Mexico. These natural products are taking advantage of the properties of seaweed, which have been known to be beneficial for skin and hair for hundreds of years.
