Francisco Lugo, Manager of the Village Spa

If you spend any time basking in the wet areas of the Village Spa or enjoying a heavenly massage during your stay at Villa del Palmar Cancun, you are sure to recognize Francisco Lugo, the Manager at the Village Spa.  Celebrating almost 3 years running the spa and organizing wellness events at the resort, Francisco has become a key player in making sure your experiences at Villa del Palmar Cancun are relaxing and inspiring. Read on to find out what he has to share.

Could you tell our members a little bit about yourself?

I was born in the Mexican state of Chiapas, in the rainforest area, the third child of a family of merchants. While I studied media and communications at college, life lead me to the field of hotels and hospitality in 2006 where my interest in the service industry began. I started working in the food and beverage department, followed by groups and conventions. Six years later I discovered my true passion: spas!

Having been Spa Manager at the Village Spa for almost 3 years, what improvements and changes have you contributed?

When I agreed to move from Los Cabos in Baja California to Cancun to take on the Village Spa project, it was love at first sight. I had only seen a postcard of the place, but when I arrived to see the spa, I immediately started to imagine what my life would be like in this wonderful space.

One of the most important achievements since I arrived was to increase our capacity for services. We were able to do this by training all members of our team with the best instructors from the region and from our commercial partners in the United States so that each therapist was fully trained to provide any service on the menu. In order to meet the new boom we had to move our offices so that we could include an extra cabin for treatments. I am very proud of the professional training that each of us who works here has received.

I am also very proud of the work we have done creating signature rituals that surprise and captivate our members and guests as well as the success of October Wellness, our yearly event dedicated to wellbeing that will be launching its third edition this year. October Wellness gives us the opportunity to promote wellness in all aspects not just the spa and massages but a whole collection of activities to help us lead more healthy lifestyles.

What plans do you have for the spa in the future?

The year ahead will be dedicated to renovations and improvements. It is likely that the Village Spa will not look the same in 2018. We are planning to improve the relaxation areas and refresh the look of our cabins. We also hope to redesign the beauty salon and work on changes to the spa menu to reflect the new products offered by the best cosmetic brands. We also have a new beach menu for those people who want to spend as much time as possible on the beach.

What benefits can members enjoy at Village Spa?

All of our visitors are very important to us, but we have to admit that we have a special “soft spot” for our members since they visit us regularly, sometimes a few times a year. We recently extended the benefits of the VIP Card which was previously only applicable for massages and now we offer a 25% discount on body treatments too, including our rituals! Our Elite members can enjoy the hydrotherapy area at no additional cost, and there are special packages and upgrades that we can offer at preferential rates.

What is your favorite spa treatment and why?

Without a doubt the Tzolkin Agave Ritual is my personal favorite. It is a treatment that is 100% Mexican using the most famous ingredient from our country: the blue agave, which is the plant used for making tequila. Agave has special properties such as anti-inflammatory and moisturizing benefits, and this treatment is great for the body as well as the face. It is a journey of 120 minutes which involves a number of soothing techniques including the placement of stones in specific locations on the body related to the position of the stars, one of our most complete anti-aging facials and a personalized massage which uses an aromatic agave butter.

What other spa services should members try?

The rituals are a highlight of the Village Spa. Besides offering the best prices, you can try the very best treatments on the menu combining exfoliation to revive the skin and remove dead skin cells, moisturising treatments, detox techniques thermal masks, massages and facials. The rituals are a definite treat for hedonists and spa lovers.

What events will the Village Spa be involved in?

The Village Spa gets involved in a number of the events at the resort. For example, on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day each year, it has become a tradition for us to set up an outdoor spa area to provide courtesy treatments for a couple of hours to moms and pops on their respective days. We arrange a similar treat on April 30 when Mexico celebrates El Día del Niño (Children’s Day). We will reserve the spa areas for children for 2 hours so they can enjoy the experiences that adults have throughout the year, preparing special services for children. October Wellness, as I mentioned earlier, is another major event for us at the spa.

What do you like best about your job?

I love having the opportunity to create an atmosphere where we can promote healthy lifestyles and positive experiences that leave our members and guests feeling happy and totally relaxed. The Village Spa is a place where people can totally disconnect from the outside world and forget their worries. At the same time, I love being able to support the career progression of the professionals who work with us at the spa. In these past three years, the Village Spa has trained many individuals who are today considered amongst our top therapists; some have even become leaders themselves.

I am grateful to Tafer Hotels & Resorts for believing in me and my team. With the future resort openings, I have a lot of work ahead and many more experiences to create for our members and visitors.
